1896 Marked the
invention of the celluloid button. Naturally with the election of 1896 this new
novelty was marketed widely. Buttons were marketed as nickel nailers as salesmen would claim fast sales of buttons sold for a nickel a piece. The time period from 1896 to 1916 is considered the Golden Age of campaign buttons. Several companies put out hundreds of beautiful and colorful designs, the largest company being the Whitehead and Hoag Co. This new medium became so popular that it has become the very symbol of political campaigns.
